Two days to reflect on tobacco consequences to our children’s health

On the 26th of May, our partner organisation European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention (ENSP) organised a special event at the European Parliament, hosted by the Member of the European Parliament Cristian-Silviu BUȘOI (Romania, Group of the European People's Party). The event was a joint commemoration of the World No Tobacco Day, observed around the world every year on the 31st of May, and the International Children Day, celebrated on the 1st of June. Children are among the most affected by tobacco use worldwide, with 31% of the deaths attributable to second-hand smoke occurring in children.

Roberta Savli, Senior EU Policy Advisor, presented “When parental right to smoke clashes with children’s right to health”, highlighting the negative health consequences for children and unborn babies to be exposed to second-hand smoke and suggesting policy proposals that range from a total ban on smoking in all public places across the EU, a ban on smoking in cars, better education for new and future parents and smoking considerations to be included in workplaces and indoor air quality policies. The presentation is available here.

This follows EFA’s participation at the 16th edition of the World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCTOH), read more in our new blog entry and listen to the webcast of our presentation (surname of the presenter: Savli).
