Every three years the World Health Organisation (WHO) publishes a snapshot of the health situation in the European Region.  The document gives recommendations on how to progress towards health and well-being for all.

Although the report shows continued improvements in health throughout the region and a decrease in certain health inequalities between countries, such as life expectancy and infant mortality, absolute differences between countries remain unacceptably large.  This is especially true for indicators linked to social determinants of health. Moreover, the European region presents the highest rates of alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking in the world.

The report shows trends in, and progress towards, Health 2020, the European health policy goals. It also reveals some gaps in progress, inequalities, and areas of concern and uncertainty, where action must be taken.
