As part of our Capacity Building project, EFA will sponsor five allergy, asthma and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and patient representatives to complete the European Patients’ Academy on Therapeutic Innovation’s (EUPATI) Patient Expert Training from 2023-2024.

EUPATI is a patient-led partnership working across stakeholders to enhance patient engagement in medicine research and development (R&D), funded by the European Union. The training, also known as the EUPATI Fellow Training, is designed specifically for patients and patient representatives. It is a flexible online platform featuring six e-learning modules on medicines research and development (R&D) processes in the EU, from research priorities to dissemination, communication and post approval.

EUPATI certification

Graduates of the EUPATI Fellow Training, known as EUPATI Fellows or Alumni, receive an EUPATI certification which qualifies them as patient experts in their field. This certification is recognised within the patient engagement sphere and identifies graduates as highly sought-after partners by stakeholders.

EUPATI Alumni are active within patient organisations but also work with industry, regulators and health technology assessment (HTA) bodies, at national and European levels. They may also be asked to help produce and review new trainings and content for the EUPATI programme itself, participate in EUPATI events and even co-deliver EUPATI trainings.

Currently there are only around 250 EUPATI Alumni in the world, making this a special opportunity to increase the profile of allergy, asthma and COPD while having our say on medicine R&D and regulatory processes.

Required commitment

The training is flexible and on-demand, meaning participants can complete most of the courses in their own time. The training will take place over roughly 15 months, with 300 hours of required training materials available on the online platform. Early registration in 2023 will allow EFA members to begin the modules prior to the official start date of the program later in the year.

In addition to the online programme, there are two in-person/live stream training events in which participants will have the opportunity to meet other fellows and deepen their R&D knowledge. To be able to attend these events, participants must complete a set number of courses by the date provided. The meetings will likely take place in person, in March and October 2024*. Each event will last four full days, with the final meeting culminating in the graduation ceremony.

EFA will cover all costs related to the completion of the programme (registration, travel, accommodation, etc.).
