The European Parliament Interest Group on Allergy and Asthma will gather on the 26th of April to discuss how to improve allergy prevention and care in the European Union. The meeting will follow the European Commission chronic disease Conference that will take place in April 21st and aims to define what the European Parliament can do to help address allergy in the upcoming Chronic Disease Policy process. These meetings and talks should lead to the development of a Chronic Disease strategy for the European Union. EFA has been asking for such a strategy for several years now with chapters by disease, to tackle allergy and respiratory diseases.

The prevalence of allergy and asthma has increased to alarming proportions in the past decades in conjunction with rising environmental challenges, such as pollution and climate change. Unmet needs of allergy and asthma are many, and Europe needs to take urgent action to overcome them.

The Interest Group April meeting will take the form of a cocktail where Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), doctors and patients representatives will brainstorm around allergy management. We hope to have more MEPs joining the Interest Group in 2016 to joint efforts to reduce the burden of allergies in Europe.

At the start of the allergy season, the Interest Group will open an exhibition to raise awareness about allergy. They will also launch a two-day allergy skin prick test session at Parliament that will be conducted by doctors for free. The results of the tests will be communicated to the participants individually and in a confidential manner.
