London, 23 May 2016 - Allergy and respiratory patients from all over Europe will visit on May 23rd the United Kindgom House of Commons, invited by Member of Parliament Stephen McPartland.

Allergy is expected to affect more than 50% of all Europeans in 10 years' time and there are 5.4 million people with asthma in the UK, which means asthma affects one in every 11 people and one in five households. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is to become the third cause of death by 2020 worldwide.

EFA, the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients’ Associations, organizing the meeting, is an umbrella organisation representing one third of the European population who live with these diseases. The visit to the UK chamber will serve to raise awareness about the burden that respiratory conditions pose to patients, carers and health systems.

This visit is organised in the framework of EFA’s Annual General Meeting taking place in London from the 23-24 May. EFA Members Allergy UK and Asthma UK are hosting the 40 patient leaders gathering to define the patient priorities that will shape European policy and research with the aim to improve allergy and respiratory patients’ access to quality of life.

Notes to editors:
