Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are chronic and might last a lifetime. Asthma and allergies are NCDs affecting 70 million people in Europe, in the case of asthma, 100 million Europeans suffer from allergic rhinitis and 7 million Europeans live with a food allergy. In the past decades, the prevalence of allergy and asthma has grown to alarming proportions in conjunction with rising environmental challenges, such as air pollution and climate change.

Next October the 9th, Members of the European Parliament, European Commission representatives, European medical societies and patient organisations representing people with allergies and airways diseases in Europe will discuss EU action on research in chronic NCDs, specifically on allergy and asthma, which can drive improvements, better understanding of these diseases and the development of better treatments, especially contributing to the upcoming debates about the shape and content of the next round of the EU research and innovation framework programme.
