EFA is pleased to invite you to the upcoming event “May Contain/Contains – Food Allergen Labelling” to be held at the European Parliament on the 19th of September 2012 from 18:00 to 20:30, kindly hosted by MEP Renate Sommer.

This follows the adoption of the new EU Regulation on the provision of food information to consumers by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union last year. EFA broadly welcomed the Regulation as a positive step towards protecting the health of people with food allergies, and hopes that the result will be clearer and more easily understood food information for consumers, and most importantly those with food allergy.

The event is being organised in cooperation with the EuropeanAcademyof Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI). The main plenary session will include discussions on the new Regulation’s importance for people with allergies and its implications for the labelling of allergens in food products. It will also focus on the shortcomings of the Regulation and what scope there is for improvement: for example the unresolved issue of so-called precautionary labelling (‘may contain…’), and how best to resolve it.

Food allergy itself and its occurrence will be topics of debate, and two panels will discuss best practices in food allergen labelling. The evening will also feature patient testimony on living with and challenging food allergy.   Participants will include patient representatives and organisations, EFA members, MEPs, researchers, EU officials and other interested stakeholders.
