Research has revealed that people with asthma tend to overconsume emergency medicine and do not use preventative medicine enough. In consequence, this can lead to worsening of the disease and its symptoms.

EFA member Allergy-Asthma Denmark wrote about the research to highlight the issue with patients not being informed enough about preventative treatment options. It leads to the underlying inflammatory condition being left untreated which risks aggravation of the symptoms.

It can also lead to the over-consumption of emergency treatment in asthma patients, whereas a more preventative approach can tailor to the needs of the individual and improve disease-management.

Allergy-Asthma Denmark highlighted the need to “re-educate” patients and healthcare professionals, to not only learn about the common emergency treatment but also to optimise preventative treatment.
