With EU-funded MeDALL project lifespan coming to an end, EFA organized a public event at the European Parliament in Brussels to inform decision makers and relevant stakeholders in the field of allergy on the project outcomes and their integration into clinical practice.

20150528 MeDALL Symposium EP Panel

The event was hosted by the Member of the European Parliament Alberto Cirio (Italy, EPP) on the 28th of May and was attended by 30 key representatives from patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, and policy makers. The MeDALL consortium was represented by prof. Jean Bousquet and prof. Magnus Wickman who presented the MeDALL results and their implications in clinical practice, and by EFA Project Manager Giuseppe de Carlo who, on behalf of patient representative in MeDALL Per-Ake Wecksell, showed all work EFA has done to ensure the respect of ethics and safety standards in MeDALL research activities and how the project will benefit patients.

The presentations led to interesting discussions among the members of the panel and the audience: in particular, prof. Antii Lauerma from the University of Helsinki gave an insight on the Finnish Allergy Programme which was part of MeDALL translational activities; Nina Laesso Jakobsen from the European Commission DG Health and Consumers presented all activities implemented by the Commission in the field of food allergies and in particular on food labelling; Lindsey McManus from Allergy UK explored opportunities for patient organizations to promote the integration of research results at local level; Peter Hellings from EAACI stressed the importance of joining forces in the European Union in order to develop effective management plan on allergy and to empower patients.

The event was also attended among others by Ms Vidal Ragout, Head of Medical Research Unit at the European Commission, who discussed with the consortium representative how to move forward with research activities now that the project is concluded.

A report of the event will be available shortly.
