On September 14th, EFA, together with Global Skin, is marking World Atopic Eczema Day. With the day’s theme BENEATH THE SURFACE we raise awareness and understanding of this allergic skin disease. We invite you to join us on this day and to follow us on Social Media.

Atopic Eczema goes beneath the surface

Atopic Eczema is a common yet still neglected chronic disease affecting 1 in 5 European children. Intense and persistent itching is one of its most debilitating symptoms, leading to long-lasting pain. It nearly always restricts quality of life, impacts mental health and leads to the development of other diseases.

Each day, people living with atopic eczema experience how the disease impacts their lives beyond their skin.

European Report on Quality of Life and costs for severe atopic eczema patients

EFA’s European report Itching for Life: Quality of Life and costs for people living with severe atopic eczema in Europe uncovers the reality of atopic eczema: a majority of patients living with severe atopic eczema say the intense itching drives them crazy; the more severe the eczema symptoms, the higher the risk for depression.

Atopic eczema patients also need to adapt daily life products like cloth or cosmetics in order to avoid additional irritation of the skin. Such special needs for skin care lead to extra spending for European severe atopic eczema patients of 927,12 Euro per year, on average.

AtopicalLives: New online photo gallery

Our new AtopicalLives online photo gallery introduces eczema patients from all over Europe and shows how the eczema affects their daily lifes far beyond their skin. We invite you to visit and spread this exhibition and to share your personal eczema story with the community. Please feel free to also download the pictures and use them to raise awareness for atopic eczema and the people living with it.
