Early 2017, the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker presented a White Paper on the future of Europe, outlining 5 potential scenarios. In these scenarios, option 4 considers “doing less” on some policy areas and we are witnessing worrying signs that EU health policy has been selected as one of those. If this is confirmed, it will mean there will be less or no meaningful EU action on health after 2020.

EFA, together with more than other 230 public health organisations, supports the campaign EU: Do More for Health. We are calling for an enhanced EU action in the field of health that brings the EU closer to its citizens, by preventing diseases, protecting patients and consumers and improving people’s health. We believe that without a Commissioner and a dedicated Directorate General responsible for health governance and health in all policies, health would be marginalised and subordinated to economic considerations.
